Make-Up, Nails, Beauty & Starting Your Own Business at QLS Level 3

This course is split up into twelve units:

UNIT ONE: Health & Safety and Professional Conduct

This unit introduces students to the key pieces of legislation relating to the beauty industry, including important health & safety laws, and employment rules. It also lays out the professional standards expected of people working in the beauty industry.

UNIT TWO: Skin and Nails: Anatomy and Medical Conditions

In this unit, students will learn about the important principles of anatomy that underpin the effective administration nail and skin treatments. Students will also explore the different kinds of medical conditions that can affect the skin and nails, and how this impacts upon what decisions a beautician makes for their client.

UNIT THREE: Skin Care and Facials

Here, students will be walked through the techniques required to administer basic skin care and facial treatments, including proper cleansing and massage.

UNIT FOUR: Removing and Lightening Unwanted Hair

In this unit students will first learn about the basic anatomy of hair, and then about the different methods that can be used to remove or disguise unwanted hair. This includes waxing, bleaching and sugaring.

UNIT FIVE: Eyebrows and Lashes

This unit includes detailed instruction on some of the different ways to improve to the appearance of eyebrows and lashes, including tinting, shaping and perming. In addition, it introduces students to some of the hazards involved when working close to a client’s eyes, and gives advice about how to do so safely.

UNIT SIX: Manicure and Pedicure

Unit six covers the basics of manicure and pedicure treatments, as well as exploring other hand and foot treatments such as massage and waxing.

UNIT SEVEN: Acrylic and Gel Nails – Nail Arts & Wraps

For those learners especially interested in working with nails, this unit deals with some of the more advanced treatments that clients might request. As well as your written learning materials, you will also have the help of an instructional DVD for this section of the course.

UNIT EIGHT: Make-up

The proper application of make-up is different for each individual. This unit seeks to prepare learners to make individual choices and recommendations for their client, based on skin tone, skin type, and any medical concerns. Students will learn about a broad range of treatments and techniques.

UNIT NINE: Starting Your Own Small Business

This unit will introduce the idea of transferring students’ passion and skill into a viable business. This will involve a rigorous self-assessment of the viability of any business idea, and help students to think about/ refine how they might want to pursue their career as a beautician

UNIT TEN: Theft and Fraud

In business it is necessary to inoculate yourself to the dangers of theft and fraud, both from outside your business and from within it. This unit will show you how.

UNIT ELEVEN: Marketing and Advertising

Perhaps the most important part of making a business that is viable and profitable is making people aware that you exist in the first place. Marketing and advertising are vital in this regard, and this unit will explore the different ways you can make your services visible to the public.

UNIT TWELVE: The Business Plan

This unit invites students to think about their business idea in the long term. Without thorough planning, any new business is likely to fail. This unit will prepare you to go into the world of business with your eyes wide open.

At the end of this course successful learners will be given the option to receive a Certificate of Achievement from the Quality Licence Scheme and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the components the learner has completed as part of the course).

The course has been endorsed under the Quality Licence Scheme.  This means that Kendal Publishing Ltd has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet defined quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to a regulated qualification* but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills gained. The Learner Unit Summary may be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this subject. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 3 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner.

Paper Based Version

The course comes to you as a paper-based pack delivered by courier.

You will be given guidance through the Study Guide on the nuts and bolts of studying and submitting assignments.

Postal assignments cannot be accepted without prior permission from the tutor.

Online Version

Our online courses are fully digitised versions of the paper-courses, so you can study on any PC or smart device when connected to the internet.

As with the paper course, your online learning programme is completely flexible, so you can study at a pace that suits you.

All of our online course content is broken down into bite size chunks to make your learning more manageable and effective.

The course contains a number of assignments which your tutor will mark and give you valuable feedback on. We call these Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs). You need only send the TMAs to your tutor for comment, not the self-assessment exercises which are also part of the course to help you gauge your progress.

This course can be taken over a 12 month period but you can complete it as fast or as slowly as you wish.

You will have access to a tutor via email who will mark your work and guide you through the course and will assist you with any problems you may have. In addition you will be supplied with a comprehensive Study Guide which will help you through the study and assessment process.
