The course is available to learners 16+ who wish to work within a school or college, particularly in the role of a Teaching Assistant, Classroom Assistant or Learning Support Assistant. It is a knowledge based qualification which can be studied prior to taking up a placement or permanent position.
The qualification is aimed at a range of learners who are thinking of working in a school or college setting, including young people, mature learners, learners with special educational needs, or where English is an additional language.

Aims & Objectives
This qualification is an introduction to the knowledge and understanding needed to work in a school or college environment. It can apply to the many varied roles that full and part time support staff may fulfil including administrative roles, site support roles, technical roles and volunteers, as well as roles that work directly with children and young people in the learning environment.
The qualification provides a progression route to the level 2 and 3 Supporting Teaching & Learning practical skills based qualifications.
The course consists of 6 units, as listed below:
UNIT 1: Understand Schools and Colleges as Organisations
- Know the different types of schools and colleges in the education sector.
- Understand the organisation of schools and colleges in terms of roles and responsibilities.
- Understand how schools and colleges uphold their aims and values.
- Know about the range and purpose of school and college policies and procedures
UNIT 2: Understand Children and Young People’s Development.
- Understand significant stages of development for children and young people from birth to 19 years of age.
- Understand the kinds of influences that affect children and young people’s development.
- Understand the potential effects of transitions on children and young people’s development.
UNIT 3: Understand Communication and Professional Relationships with Children, Young People and Adults.
- Understand how to develop professional relationships with children and young people.
- Understand how to communicate with children and young people.
- Understand how to develop professional relationships with adults.
UNIT 4: Understand Children and Young People’s Health and Safety.
- Know the legislative and policy framework for health and safety within a learning environment.
- Recognise and understand how to manage risks to children and young people’s health, safety and security.
- Know how to support children and young people in relation to risk management.
- Know about current policies and procedures for confidentiality and sharing information, including data protection.
UNIT 5: Safeguarding Children and Young People.
- Know about safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.
- Understand action to take when children and young people are ill or injured, including emergency procedures.
- Understand child protection procedures.
- Know about current policies and procedures for confidentiality and sharing information, including data protection.
UNIT 6: Understand Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Work with Children and Young People.

Course Endorsement
This course provides successful students with a qualification from NCFE-CACHE, regulated by Ofqual. Cache is an Awarding Organisation recognised by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) in England and by the Welsh Government.
This is a knowledge based qualification suitable for support roles in schools and colleges, including site staff, administrators etc as well as those who work directly with children and young people.
This qualification seeks to develop the knowledge and understanding that all those working in a school/college setting will need and covers areas such as safeguarding, communication and understanding the learning context.
Method of Study
The course is designed for study by distance learning at work or at home. No placement in school or college is required. Students receive course manual, assignments and studyguide plus tutor support by mail and email. You can start at any time and plan your studies over a period of up to one year from the time of enrolment.
Method of Assessment
Your course of study is broken down into units and sections, each of which contains lessons, activities and test papers.
You will be assessed by a series of written assignments, marked by your tutor.
Course Length Information
This course can be taken over a 12 month period, but you can complete it as fast or as slowly as you wish.
The ‘guided learning hours’ recommendation is around 90.
Tutor Support
You will have access to a tutor via email who will mark your work and guide you through the course and will assist you with any problems you may have. In addition you will be supplied with a comprehensive Study Guide which will help you through the study and assessment process.
